Blue vestments not in Roman Rite

There has been some talk all over the blogsphere about the use of blue vestments during Advent at Mass. Well, blue vestments are not approved for the Roman Rite. The only colors approved as vestments for the Roman Rite, as specified by Pope Innocent III in 1216, are as follows:

Violet: Advent, Pre-Lent, Lent, Ember Days, Rogation Days, confessions, the first half of baptisms, Extreme Unction, and any Votive Masses of penitential nature.

White/Gold: Christmas, Easter, Masses of Our Lord and Our Lady, the Feast of St. John the Evangelist (the apostle who was not martyred), feasts of the Saints who are not martyrs, second half of a baptism, Holy Communion outside Mass, Weddings, Confirmation, ordination outside of a violet vestment day, and anytime the regular color is not avaliable in the vestry.

Red: Feasts of Pentecost, the Holy Cross, all martyrs, and the votive Masses as such.

Green: Sundays and ferial days after Epiphany and after Pentecost.

Black: Requiem Masses and All Souls Day

So there you go, there are only 5 different colors that are approved for use in the Roman Rite. No blue is mentioned.

However, in the Sarum Rite, the official liturgy of Salisbury Cathedral (pre-Reformation), blue is used as a liturgical color for Advent and Feasts of Our Lady, including the Immaculate Conception (which always falls during Advent).

Whereas, a friend of mine is an Anglo-Catholic who belongs to a parish that uses blue as a liturgical color for the days/seasons I've mentioned above. Many Anglo-Catholic parishes will use blue only as a "tribute" toward the Sarum Rite of the Roman Rite, of which Quo Primum Tempore approves of since it was codified before the year A.D. 1370.  Sarum Rite Masses are rare, even in England, so I have not seen the full jist of a Sarum Mass, either in person or on video.

In accordance of Summorum Pontificum, I believe no indult is necessary to use the Sarum Rite since it's more than 200 years older the Quo Primum, but I may be wrong. The Dominican, Carmelite, and Ambrosian Rites are being used today in certain areas because they are 200 years older than Quo Primum just like the Sarum Rite, only they have not been destroyed like the Tridentine Rite was after Vatican II. Therefore, the Eastern Rite Catholic rituals may be celebrate as well because they obviously are more than 200 years older than Quo Primum.

In terms of the new Novus Ordo English translation, there have been problems already. Since I exclusively attend Mass in the Extraordinary Form, I have not witnessed any perils, although someone told Fr. Z that there is a typo in one publisher's version of the new missal, and the mistake happens to be the Introit for the First Sunday of Advent. Great. Worse off, people are still saying "and with also with you", while they are now supposed to be saying "and with thy spirit."

I wonder how many Masses this weekend are still invaild because nobody can get the words straight? Sadly, there are still too many abuses in the Novus Ordo Missae that cannot be corrected within itself, but can be corrected by trashing the 1970 book altogether and adopt the Traditional Latin Mass. There, no abuses exist, but they're minor and unnoticable if some unfortunately do.

The sermon today was a condemnation of "Black Friday," the crazy day after Thanksgiving where people camp-out in the mall parking lots to get in at a midnight opening to do Christmas shopping. Well, Christmas season does not start until December 25th, but people think that it's going on now with all the lavish decorations and music over the radio. According to the commericalized world, Christmas is over on the 25th at 11:59 PM, and you don't hear O Holy Night on the 26th!

For Catholics, however, Christmas starts on December 25th and ends on January 6th (Epiphany), with an octave until the 13th (Baptism of the Lord), with the final cycle ending on Candlemas (Feburary 2). But until then, we have to prepare in penance, just like Lent, although no fasting is required except on Fridays, Ember Days, and Christmas Eve.

Bishops are supposed to name parishes

Fr. Z has wrote a fictional scenerio on the process of merging two or more parishes into one parish. While the story (which can be accessed here) is hilarious and unorthodox, the very same processes and ideas on how a parish is named or renamed is one of the sad realities of the Post-Conciliar period.

First of all, it is the bishop of the diocese who determines what the names of the parish churches are. For example, if a church building that burned down was St. Mary's, and on the day of consecration, the bishop decides to consecrate it as "Our Lady of Victory", the change of the parish name is effective immediately. If the old St. Joseph's Parish church building had relics of St. Therese in a side altar, and they are transferred in the new high altar, the parish is now known as "St. Therese Parish."

Now, here comes the point that Fr. Z is trying to make. If  the bishop decides that St. Peter's and St. Paul's are to be merged into one parish, and that they use St. Peter's Church, then the bishop has the authority to change the name of the actual parish, but not the parish church. In the Pre-Vatican II days, this parish church would not be renamed Ss. Peter & Paul unless (1) the church is reconsecrated, with the relics of BOTH St. Peter and St. Paul placed in the high altar, or (2) the Holy See changes the name of the parish church, which is rarely thought of.

So while the names of the actual church buildings would survive a parish merger, the acutal names of the parishes could be changed by the bishop.

But sadly, many bishops leave the naming rights up to the parish council, which I was a member of one once, sad to say. They could name the parish after a saint who's relics are not in the mensa, or even worse, some profane name, such as "Peace Parish", "Rainbow of God", "First Catholic Church of Anytown", or even "Satan Hall." Better yet, they could "sell" the naming rights as if it were a sports arena, such as "Liberty Church", "Wegman's Worship Center", or "Prudential House of God." (Hey, I still prefer "New Boston Garden" over "TD Garden", since everyone still calls it "The Garden.")

The bottom line is, that bishops have to be bishops. They cannot build new "faith communities" but churches, where the Blessed Sacrament is located and not a peep is heard. A place where people dress with dignity, not like strip club material you see in most Novus Ordo houses of worship today.

Free Press Exposed, Vol. 1, Issue 7

Today in the mail, the elders received today's edition of The Catholic Free Press, which has significant coverage on the 75th anniversary Mass of Christ the King Parish. Established in 1936, Christ the King grew out of Blessed Sacrament Parish, and a temporary church was built within 45 days of establishement. The parish was rural and had more cows than souls.

However, the present church building, consecrated by Bishop Wright on the Feast of Christ the King, October 26, 1958, is a modernist hall designed by the Nault Family of architects, for most of whom I believe are now deceased. While there are magnificant stained glass windows purchased from other parishes, etc., the whole building is not like a Catholic house of worship that our ancestors would be proud of.

Unfortunately, I have been in Christ the King once, but thankfully not for a Mass, but for a meeting. While the meeting spaces are what meeting rooms should look like, the sanctuary does not look like the Church that Bishop Wright could have consecrated. There is no trace of a high altar.

This past Sunday, according to the newspaper, Christ the King celebrated their 75th Anniversary Mass on "the Feast of Christ the King." Sorry, but Sunday was not the Feast of Christ the King! Sunday was the Last Sunday after Pentecost, and Christ the King was the Last Sunday of October, as promulgated by Pope Pius XI in 1925.

But again, this is just another Novus Ordo parish. While the parish has a lot of families and children in it, this is because they are on the West Side of Worcester, a.k.a. "The People with Tons of Money." So they are going to this parish because it's close by, whereas the families, if they really wish to be serious in the practice of the Catholic Faith, could make an effort to travel elsewhere on Sundays.

While their website is full of garbage, I'm not going to give you the link, but rather explain why a parish with many children and families in a wealthy neighborhood can't adopt Summorum Pontificum?

While there is no parish school, all children are educated through CCD and CYC. They even post the syllabi for each grade level/sacrament prep on the website. But there is no Baltimore Catechism! And for adults, RCIA (Rite of Chastizing Insitutional Advancement)! So we have to pray a Pater and an Ave for the religious ed coordinator at this parish so that she get on the ball with the times! (P.S., Benedict is the Pope, not JP2.)

This morning I had a Thanksgiving Turkey at my uncle's house, but I was missing someone. I was missing my date. Yes, the reason why I'm doing this blog. I told my mother, "No date, no Thanksgiving." But she made me go anyway, and the apple pie was the best part.

It wasn't so much the meal that triggered me to write this on a holiday, but something that landed in the elders' mailbox this week. It was an "invitation" for attendance at a Novus Ordo Mass at my ex-parish. Well, I don't attend New Masses, so my dad thought they want me to come back. I ain't coming back!

There it is! A high altar not being used.  A novena promotion that doesn't work. And the invitation of a Jesuit heretic who uses the title "Father" but is wearing a suit instead of ecclesiastical dress. I've heard enough if it already...

Please note beforehand that it's not the Catholic teaching to abstain from sex from your spouse unless a physician deems you can't safely do it without getting an STD (and that's not a Doctorate in Sacred Theology, while most of them are celibate!). 

While it is unlikely a couple will have 20 kids, two families in my parish have 10 apiece. Most have 2 and their done young, which is a serious sin.

She got it right

As you can see to the right, actress Mila Kunis is saluting the American flag with her right hand over hear heart, like a good girl should. 

On the otherhand, her marine date is not saluting the flag during the National Anthem. 

I don't understand why a marine would not salute the flag of the country he is serving!

At least an Anglican bishop got it right!

Fr. Z is relaying a message that Anglican Bishop of London Richard Chartres said that Roman Catholics must use the Roman Rite (e.g. the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite). It is a very confusing article, so read at your own risk. 

Yesterday, my parish priest gave a sermon about the Novus Ordo translations that are to start in Novus Ordo Churches this coming Sunday. Well, he mentioned, like I have mentioned in my recent posts, that Vatican II did not mandate an adoption of a new rite of Mass and the sacraments, the removal of the high altar & the communion rail, the relocation of the tabernacle to a side altar, the Latin language, Gregorian Chant, meatless Fridays, and so forth. 

If you read Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Council document issued on St. Barbara's Day, Dec. 4, 1963, regarding the sacred liturgy, there is no language that says that a new missal be written. My priest also noted that this is the only document that the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebrve voted "Yes" on during the whole Second Vatican Council. All the others he voted "No" because they contradict traditional Catholic teachings. 

In regards to the Anglo-Catholics using the Anglican Missal, the Anglican Missal is only the Tridentine Missal in Elizabethian English.

More reason to get him canned

Lifesite News is reporting that Cardinal Sean has been elected Pro-life chair for the USCCB. This is disturbing since we faithful Catholics are trying to get him canned with our online petititon drive. Please note that the USCCB is not an authority of the Church; they cannot make theological teachings or amend Canon Law. While dogma doesn't chance, the rules have to be changed by the Pope alone, if applicable. Please, continue to sign the petition.

People under 50 don't know Catholicism? Uh, sort of.

The year 2012 will be here in six weeks or so, and 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II. To put this into retrospect, Michael Voris explains that he just turned 50 recently, and that 50-year-olds are the first generation of Catholics to see the Church get destroyed to what it is today:

Unless you attend a Latin Mass and practice traditional Catholicism, chances are people under 50 don't know the true teachings of the Catholic Church. My parents are older than 50, so they grew up with the Latin Mass, but don't appreciate it as much as I do, and I was born into the Novus Ordo Church. 

My parish has plenty of children in it; the altar boys are boys. Baptism is done ASAP. Confession is pentitential, and Extreme Unction is reserved for "at danger of death." There are no eucharistic ministers, no lay lectors, no guitars, no bands, no sign of peace, and no one touches the host except the priest, deacon, and subdeacon.

Please sign the petition to remove Cardinal Sean and (some of) his auxiliaries!

The Boston Catholic Insider is pretty fed-up with the way the Archdiocese of Boston is being handled and managed. Most of it is that His Eminence, Sean Cardinal O'Malley, has been a disappointment since being named Archbishop in 2003 to replace Cardinal Law. Based on the allegations being brought foward by the BCI, I signed the petition and encourage you, Catholic or not, living the the archdiocese or not, to sign the online petition, which is co-sponsored by Real Catholic TV (not the fake Catholic TV that the archdiocese owns).

Singing this will be beneficial and important for the people of the archdiocese since it has been mismanaged since in recent years, and the Cardinal Archbishop and his auxiliary bishops are not doing anything about these allegations below:

I respectfully request that the Holy See take steps to address the ongoing problem of weak episcopal leadership in the Boston Archdiocese.

In Boston today, we face challenges including declining Mass attendance (only 17% of Catholics attend Mass regularly), a declining number of priests, declining financial stability for parishes (one third of parishes operating with annual deficits), declining enrollment in Catholic schools, and declining influence of the Catholic Church's voice in public policy. At the same time, in recent years, Boston Catholics have seen the following shortcomings in episcopal leadership in the areas of teaching and governance:

Archbishop Dolan bans gay marriage

This is the first great step for man to be closer to God.

His Excellency, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York City has forbidden anything which equals "Catholic+gay."

On a decree dated October 18th, the Archbishop has banned all Catholics in his archdiocese from participating in gay civil unions. (The full text of the decree can be read here.)

As I said at the top, this is the first great step for man to be closer to God.

I am very happy the Archbishop issued the decree in retaliation against the two GOP state senators (both whom are Catholics and Knights of Columbus) who voted in favor of making sodomy legal in the Empire State, and for the "Catholic?" governor for signing it into law. Such an act was never done by any of the Bishops in Massachusetts when Goodrich v. Dept. of Public Health was heard before the Supreme Judicial Court and declared that traditional marriage was unconsitutional.

I am glad that an American prelate has finally put his foot down on the rapid pace of same-sex marriages that are being licensed every weekend, and more states, and even now the Feds want to get into the business. While merchants will be making plenty of cash that stimulates the economy in Midtown Manhattan, Traditionalist Catholics know better that this behavior is morally unacceptable.

Gay marriage is not the only problem. There are plenty of mixed marriages that are being recognized by the Novus Ordo Church. (For ecclesiastical purposes, a "mixed" marriage is that between a Catholic and non-Catholic.) While most Novus Ordo priests and bishops sign-off on interfaith gatherings, the traditional Roman Catholic Church and her clergy will never approve of such actions because it is an impediment to marriage. That's right. If you, the Catholic, marry a heretic, and your marriage ends up in divorce (which is a 50-50 chance), then  your marriage was null and void because you both were not baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, & Holy Ghost. End of story.

Now, last but not certainly the least, Novus Ordo Weddings outright. When a V2 couple decides to marry with the blessing of the church, they will pay $500-1000 dollars for a weekend retreat that does not deal with the Christian principles of marriage, nor they will not get a chance at Sunday Mass. For the ceremony itself, the parish will charge the couple $2500-5000 for the ceremony as a "stipend" for the priest officiant (prohibited by Canon Law). The couple had been cohabitating before and during the engagement, which is another impediment toward marriage. Then, the ceremony (yes, its a ceremony; no Masses in the Novus Ordo Church) is done with too many restrictions.

But the two worst things are: (1) the bride and bridesmaids are wearing immodest dresses, and (2) the bride does not take her new husband's surname completely. It's Mr. & Mrs.; not Ms. & Mr. They then contracept.

At least the traditional Catholic couple will get a Betrothal at the church to begin marriage prepartion; take a Pre-Vatican II Pre-Cana class; chastity before the vows, which take place before the Nuptial Mass (a full Mass with the Nuptial Blessing after the Pater Noster and Blessing of Abraham after the Ite Missa Est), the dresses (at least in church) are modest, the Showering of the Blessed Virgin Mary (or Coronation), a Mr. & Mrs. Couple, and hopefully, a loving and caring Catholic home with lots of children.

Catholic Campaign for Human Deformation

Tomorrow, diocesan parishes will be taking up the second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), a program of the USCCB that is supposed to help less fortunate people.

Well, that is not the case. Your collection money goes to immorality. It supports abortion, contraception, and sodomy among other things. 

Since my parish is a diocesan parish, they have to collect this sinful collection or face closure. 

Once I saw my envelope for CCHD, I ripped it up and threw it away. 

If the plate comes by, just up an acorn in the basket. 

I don't understand why the USCCB still exists, never mind this Mafia-styled charity.

Examining the Epistles (Phil. 2:5-11)

Below is St. Paul's teaching on the sacredness of the Holy Name of Jesus:

[6] Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: [7] But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. [8] He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross. [9] For which cause God also hath exalted him, and hath given him a name which is above all names: [10] That in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth:
[7] Emptied himself: exinanivit, made himself as of no account.
[11] And that every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the Father.
Jesus Christ, the second person of the Blessed Trinity, is to revered in the Most Blessed Sacrament, and when announced audibly, even in casual conversation. It is customary for Catholics to strike their breasts when the Holy Name of Jesus is announced, whether it's in Church or not. The Sign of the Cross is supposed to be made by a Catholic when passing by a [traditional] Catholic Church. (If you are the driver, you obviously can't sign without getting into an accident!) Every time we pass by the Blessed Sacrament, we genuflect on our right knees. When Jesus is exposed in the monstrance, then we kneel on both knees. (Likewise, when the bishop passes by, we genuflect on the left knee.)
Sadly, in today's post-concilliar period, Our Lord has been removed from the high altar and placed in a side chapel in all parish churches. There is no such thing as the high altar in many places, and they have been replaced with a "presidential chair", just like a masonic lodge. But worse, many parishes have closed, seminaries closed, convents empty, professed religious abandoning their vows, Catholic school have closed with the remaining ones Catholic in name only, etc. All this is because of the lack of respect for the Holy Name.

Fugitive Priest goes to Asia: Look out!

Several weeks ago I reported on the news item that Lowe Dongor, a priest of the Worcester Diocese, was arraigned on child porn and larceny charges. Now, the "Fugitive Priest" is now on the run somewhere in Asia after he was a no-show at a court hearing the other day. In result, Bishop McManus wrote a letter to the Filipino bishops telling them he is "not a priest in good canonical standing." (You may read the T&G article here.)

Now, this is not what I want to hear. First of all, this is one what slipped through the cracks, and should have not been allowed to enter the seminary. Secondly, he was released on personal recognizance, another mistake by the court. He should have been locked up in jail, and now the FBI has to get involved trying to hunt him down.

Lastly, if a priest or bishop of the Latin Rite refuses to say the Latin Mass, then they should no longer be affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.
