Steubenville East is a "Catholic" youth/young adult conference that takes place every summer in either a New England State or in New York or New Jersey. It's based on the Charismatic practices that take place at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. To see a distrubing sample what happens at the main conference at the university, you may access a YouTube video here. (I did not embed it on this post because of the distrubing images and the nature of the event!)
In the August 5th edition of The Catholic Free Press, the back page is dedicated to this heretical event. This year's event took place from July 22-24th at the University of Rhode Island, a non-Catholic college. There are only a few pictures, but they are "minimally offensive" to the Immaculate Heart of Mary compared to the YouTube link which caused Our Lady to cry. Girls in t-shirts are not as bad than talking in front of the Blessed Sacrament, I guess.
The disturbing remarks come from a 16-year-old young woman named Angela (I'm withholding the last name), a representive from the Worcester Diocese. In a guest commentary, she writes:
The first night there we had adoration and I just asked God to open my heart to him, and that's exactly what he did. We had adoration every other night and reconciliation on Wednesday night. On nights we didn't have adoration we would have praise and worship, where we prayed to God in songs.
Stop! This is not Catholic teaching! You cannot sing praise and worship songs because they are not approved by the Holy See. Plus, there is no such thing as "reconciliation", although most think the contrary. The proper term is the Sacrament of Penance, or Confession; you receive this Sacrament by confessing your sins to a priest and doing penance for the faults that you have committed. This takes place in a confessional, not a "reconciliation room."
On the other side of the page, there were brief testimonials from various attendees. Some of these are disturbing as well:
"When the priest walked around holding the monstrance, what struck me was how the people reacted. People were crying. People just fell to their knees. It was amazing how I saw God touch their hearts." -Joshua
First of all, the priest is not supposed to walk around with the monstrance, unless it is a large cathedral or a procession, where he would carry the monstance under a canopy, accompanied by the deacon and subdeacon. This is part of the whole Benediction rite; open your Missal and see the ceremonial for Corpus Christi and it will tell you what happens during Benediction and Exposition. This is the only time of the year that each parish is required to have Benediction and Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
"It's a wonderfull experience for teenagers to encounter Christ through adoration, confession, speakers and Mass." -Lori, adult chaperone
It would have been a wonderful time if the Adoration and Mass were using the 1962 Rubrics (or earlier). But, if a child's parents were duped into sending Junior to this event thinking it was Roman Catholic, it wasn't! I wish Steubenville adopt the Tridentine ways of thinking, just like Christendom College in Front Royal, Virginia, was established for.
The major influence why people were so psyched about this event: The Diocesan Office of Youth Ministry.
What's wrong with them, you ask?
Well, its a long story. But to make it short, I was referred to that office when I notified my ex-parish priest about the breakup from my first girlfriend (aka the one who was a lesbian). When I was given ideas to try to start some group for young adults (18-25) at the parish level, they were not very grand ideas. Most were heretical to begin with. When something at my parish finally materized, it was, you guessed it, Novus Ordo-ized from the get-go, so after a problems with the food pantry lady preventing me from marrying her daughter, I finally jumped ship to the Latin Mass parish.
We have to pray for Angela, Joshua, and Lori, for that they may be enriched in the One True Faith established by Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Please pray and Our Father and Hail Mary for this to happen. Thanks and God bless you.
