Pope Benedict XVI has named the Most Rev. Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap., the 13th Archbishop of Philadelphia. He has recently served as Archbishop of Denver since 1997. He is the first Native American archbishop in the USA.
He will succeed Justin Cardinal Rigali, who was covering up sexual abuse in parishes. This past March, Rigali suspended 21 priests for allegations of sexual abuse among other things.
Archbishop Chaput is the second Capuchin the be named an archbishop to clean up sexual abuse within the past decade. The first was my archbishop, Sean Cardinal O'Malley, OFM Cap. of Boston. Cardinal Sean has done a great job cleaning up the mess in Beantown Cardinal Law made.
Since Philadelphia has 1.5 million Catholics according to one estimate, it is possible that Archbishop Chaput made be created a Cardinal in the near future.
The installation Mass has been scheduled for September 8th, the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
